Offroader #1 Idea

What I was thinking is to build a prefectly balenced, light weight, 4x4 machine with a diesel engine and at least 9inchs of ground clearence.

So, first, to get it "perfectly balenced". What I thought is to use a East-West mounted 4WD gearbox (found in a Front mounted car/vans) only instead of using it's front diff install a transfer case to the rear output. Using a small 4 cylinder diesel engine, along the lines of a 1.9L VW Golf engine, mounted aproxamatly in the middle of the car (mid engine.) Then using front and rear soild axles with 30" to 35" tires.

Another way would be to use a gearbox from conventinal 4x4er mounted as far back as posibal but still in the front of the vehical with a small diesel engine bolted to it. As well as using soild axles just like before. This idea would require you to sit much further back in the vehical. That would not be a good thing as it is harder to see where the front wheels are going, or over a edge you plan to head down.

The chassie would be contructured from steel tube, in other words tube chassie. Something thick enough to not bend after getting airborn, but not so heavy you sink into every mud hole you find. The second idea I had is some what simular to the offroad racers they call X-Trucks.
