General Definitions of Subaru's
Written by Thomas Paine - Phizinza

There are many things that people, you and me, get wrong when talking about Subarus. I plan on researching most things, finding the right wording, the right name, the right year of manufacturing, and telling you it all here. Just to make it simple for everyone to know what everyone else is on about.

I will start with General parts of Subaru's

EA63 - A horizontally opposed flat four pushrod engine with a displasment close to 1400cc. This engine is found in Subaru's from the 60's to 70's

EA71 - Another horizontally opposed flat four pushrod engine only with a displasment close to 1600cc. This engine is found in Subaru's from the 70's. In most areas they stopped shipping this engine with there cars in 1980. I think the only car in 1980 that used this engine was the Brat.

EA81 - A horizontally opposed flat four pushrod engine with a displasment close to 1800cc. This engine is found in Subaru's from 79-84 in the wagon, 81-87 in the BRAT, and up until 94 in Australia in the Brumby.

EA81T - A Turbo'ed horizontally opposed flat four pushrod engine with a displasment close to 1800cc. Found in 81-84 turbo Wagons, 81 to 87 turbo Brats, and I think in some Jap import Subaru SRX Hatchbacks.

EA82 - A horizontally opposed flat four OHC engine with a displasment close to 1800cc. This engine uses timing belts and a Cam on the "top" of each head. This engine is a factory modified EA81, you can still see the area in the middle of the block that held the EA81 cam.

EA82T - A Turbo'ed horizontally opposed flat four OHC engine with a displasment close to 1800cc. Found in 85 to 89 RX's, and some (all?) GL-10 Wagons. Also found in Turbo XT's

ER27 - A horizontally opposed flat six OHC engine with a displasment close to 2700cc. This engine uses chains instead of timing belts. It was found in XT6's.

EJ16 - A horizontally opposed flat four OHC engine with a displasment close to 1600cc.

EJ18 - A horizontally opposed flat four OHC engine with a displasment close to 1800cc.

EJ20 - A horizontally opposed flat four engine with a displasment close to 1800cc. It comes in SOHC or DOHC. Also Turbo'ed and N/A. This engine is found in most Imprezas, WRX, STi, or just your normal ones.

EJ22 - A horizontally opposed flat four OHC engine with a displasment close to 2200cc. Commenly used in Offroading EA (MY and L-series) Subarus. It has more low end grunt them most of the others. This engine is found in Liberty's and Legacy's from the late 80's to mid 90's.

EJ25 - A horizontally opposed flat four engine with a displasment close to 2500cc. Can come in DOHC or SOHC. Also can come Turbo'ed or N/A. Found in just about ever Outback. Early DOHC EJ25's were prone to headgasket failure.

EZ30 - A horizontally opposed flat six DOHC engine with a displasment close to 3000cc. This engine is found in 3.0L Outbacks.

EZ36 - A horizontally opposed flat six DOHC engine with a displasment close to 3600cc. This engine is found in 3.6L Outback, Liberty, Tribeca and Legacys.

EG33 - A horizontally opposed flat six DOHC engine with a displasment close to 3300cc. This engine is found in the Subaru SVX

EN07 - A inline 3 cyl (3 or 4?) engine with a displasment close to 700cc. Found in Justy's.

MY DL - This is the first MY body shape to come out, in 79. It has single large headlights and organge indercators next to them. They came in Wagon, Sedan, Utility, Hatch, and Coupe. These used EA81 engines

MY GL - This model camee out in 83 I believe. They continued the DL but also sold GL's. The GL has 4 headlights (2 each side) with parkers next to them. The GL's also came in Targa Top. They came in Wagon, Sedan, Utility, Hatch, and Coupe. These used EA81/T engines

L GL - This was the replacement for the MY. It came out in Wagon, Sedan, and Coupe. While these were in perduction they continued the Hatch and Utility in the MY shape. These used EA82/T engines.

XT - These use the same running gear as L-series. They are a 2 door coupe in a wedge shape. You either like them, or hate them it seems. They came in EA82/T

XT6 - Same as the XT only with the ER27
